Senate shirk responsibility, again

“The Senate on Thursday said it would not take any decision on oil subsidy that would aggravate the suffering of Nigerians.”

  • The Buhari administration and the APC controlled congress are already under a microscope and cannot at this time do anything that will confirm what many are thinking.

I cannot believe the level of cowardice and incompetence going on in the senate. It is not the responsibility of the executive to impose tax on the people. That is an exclusive preserve of the people’s elected representatives.

Increasing VAT or reducing subsidy both constitute additional tax burden on the people and the responsibility of imposing that tax is the exclusive preserve of the legislature not the executive.

It saddens me that the more I hear from or read about members of the Nigerian senate, congress or even the executive, I get the impression, a sickening feeling, that most if not all, have no clue what is contained in the constitution they are sworn to uphold.

Any changes in the people’s tax burden must be part of budget document. Randomly imposing tax on the people shows incompetence or lack of foresight. The Buhari administration and the APC controlled congress are already under a microscope and cannot at this time do anything that will confirm what many are thinking.

God bless Nigeria.
